School Administrator's Guide to Supporting the Role of School Counselors

I thought this article was interesting because we have a counselor who is experiencing some of the duties talked about and feels overwhelmed with too many non-counselor duties. Just like counselors teachers have duties that are non-teaching related such as, lunch duty in the cafeteria or cleaning and mopping of classrooms diminishing lunch time to a mere 25 minute break first thing that morning. Teacher planning that could amount to three hours of planning during the work day are reduced to one hour that is spent going through parents notes and phone calls and eating the lunch that was supposed to be eaten at 8:30 a.m. because during their lunch time they continued to interrupt your  lunch. I like the list that was created for counselors that separated counselor duties from the non-counselor duties. With the removal of many support personnel in the school building there is so many duties that must be covered by someone or left unsupported. I think as a team in the school there to support one another, students, and parents, we should all come together and plan out how the duties could be handled throughout the year to alleviate the stress put on others because we lack the knowledge of what needs to be done therefore not respecting everyone's time.
